USPS Prioritizes Reliability with New Classification Changes for Priority Mail International

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is implementing significant changes to its Priority Mail International service to ensure reliable and affordable delivery of international mail items. Effective August 28, 2016, the USPS will require all Priority Mail International items, including Flat Rate Envelopes and Small Flat Rate Priced Boxes, to bear PS Form 2976-A, Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note - CP 72.

In a move to align with industry standards, the USPS is shifting these flat rate envelopes and boxes from the international letter-post stream to the air-parcel stream. This change will provide Priority Mail International customers with expanded access to tracking and insurance, mirroring the services already available for other types of Priority Mail International items.

The classification changes are designed to support the shift of these items away from the traditional letter-post stream, where they were previously dispatched alongside regular mail. Instead, they will now be processed and tracked like air-parcel items, ensuring that customers have greater visibility over their shipments and increased protection against loss or damage.

Despite this change, the price for Priority Mail International service remains unchanged, making it an attractive option for individuals and businesses looking to send packages to more than 180 countries worldwide. These changes are reflected in the revised Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, International Mail Manual (IMM), which will take effect on August 28, 2016.
